CHAPTER 4

The cavern was large enough for a dragon to walk with someone riding on his back, but not comfortably and Reshatharin was ducked very low.

I held the lantern as high as I could, but so far the tunnel had plunged ever downward. I could not tell if it were part of the original structure of this place, or had been added later.

It’s dragon made. Human made shows signs of toolwork and tends to be more angular. Dragon made has these melted patches and tends to more rounded structures.

So it could be very old, then.

Or it could be part of the efforts to rejuvenate the warrens. It’s impossible to say.

I tried hard not to worry about the people behind us — about Krullmark and Ystren and Panza and Ryfsmae, but the press of dragons behind us was powerful, and Reshatharin was slithering as fast as he could while keeping his head from bumping the rock. It felt as if we were racing on our bellies with no knowledge of what might await.

It feels like that because it is that. Also … while we’re here, would you care to explain this “Clawsinger” name everyone is calling you?

Apparently there’s some prophecy about someone who speaks to dragons.

Yes, but that can’t be you.

Well, I said with a dry mental voice that’s a relief because here I thought I was the only girl going around speaking to dragons.

I spoke to Alissi mind to mind, Reshatharin said, as if that proved anything. We both knew it wasn’t the same, but I said nothing and a long time later he said, I only just got you back. I don’t think I should have to share.

You aren’t sharing, I said, pressing my cheek against his neck. I can talk to them. Not be their best friend and rider.

You could be my rider, a dragon from behind us said unhelpfully.

See? Reshatharin said grimly but he also twisted so that he could look behind us and he shot a burst of flame at the wall with a growl of, Mine!

Ouch! That hurt!

But though the skin on my face and hand stung from his flame, I was grateful. Jealousy meant he still thought of himself as my dragon. And now that I had him back, I wasn’t giving him up for anything.

Good, he said, because I think we have a problem.

And then we burst out of the narrow cave and into a huge cavern and I gasped.

I have seen mountains and I have seen waterfalls and frankly, both are far more spectacular from the back of a dragon where their scale and beauty can be properly appreciated, but I have never seen them underground. More than that, this particular waterfall poured from a great height at the top of the cavern and glowed an almost magical faint aqua color while on either side of it grew some kind of moss or lichen that glowed the same aqua only more brightly.

It was so bright, in fact, that it lit the entire cavern.
